One of these theories was proposed by the psychologist Raymond Cattell. He created a taxonomy of 16 different personality traits that could be used to describe and explain individual differences between people’s personalities. Cattell’s personality factors are included in the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) which is widely used today for professional advice in education. In companies, it is used in the selection of personnel, especially for the selection of managers. It is also used in clinical diagnosis and treatment planning by assessing anxiety, adaptation, and behavioural problems. Born in 1905, Cattell saw the advent of many 20th century inventions such as electricity, telephones, cars and airplanes. He was inspired by these innovations and was anxious to apply the scientific methods used to make such discoveries to the human mind and personality. Personality, he believed, was not just an unknowable and unverifiable mystery. It was something that could be planned and arranged. Through scientific study, human characteristics and behaviors could be predicted based on the underlying personality traits. Cattell worked with psychologist Charles Spearman, known for his pioneering work in the field of statistics. Cattell later used the factor analysis techniques developed by Spearman to create his own taxonomy of personality. Psychologists have discussed at length how to define and describe personality exactly. One of these key ideas is known as the theory of personality traits. According to the theory of traits, the human personality is composed of a number of large traits or Some of the first theories of the traits attempted to describe every single trait that could exist. For example, psychologist Gordon Allport identified more than 4,000 words in thelanguage that could be used to describe personality traits. While this approach was good at identifying different types of traits, it is heavy and difficult to use. Many of these traits, for example, are very similar, making it difficult to distinguish some traits from others. This ambiguity also makes it difficult to study these personality traits. Raymond Cattell analyzed Allport’s list and narrowed it down to 171 features, mostly eliminating redundant or unusual terms. He then used a statistical technique known as factor analysis to identify the traits that are related to each other. With this method, he was able to carve his list into sixteen key personality factors. According to Cattell, there’s a continuum of personality traits. In other words, each person a contains all of these sixteen traits to some degree, but they could be high in some traits and low in others. The following list of characters describes some of the descriptive terms used for each of the sixteen personality dimensions described by Cattell.
