◦ Social responsibility: the responsibility of every citizen (individual or organisation) to contribute towards the well-being of the community and the environment in which they live. It also includes being aware of the consequences of your actions on the community, the environment and society as a whole ◦ Corporate Citizenship describes a company's role and responsibility towards society. ◦ Good corporate citizens: companies should accept that they are collectively responsible, together with government and other entities, for their local community and the environment. They must honour this as an essential part of their core business. ◦ Corporate citizenship includes creating positive changes in the community through the products and services provided and using the profits generated from doing business in the community toward community upliftment TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE Economic prosperity (Profit) • Making a profit is important to satisfy investors as well as to satisfy employees who expect remuneration Social responsibility (People) • SR is important as the focus should also be on the people in the community, customers, suppliers etc Environmental sustainability (Planet) • If we do not take care of the planet, there will be no future for the business or the generations to come. Profit/Economic • Triple Bottom line means that businesses should not only focus on profit]charge high prices, but should also invest in CSI projects. LINK BETWEEN • Businesses should not make a profit at the TRIPLE expense of its community People/Social BOTTOM LINE • Business operations should not have a negative AND SOCIAL impact on/exploit people/employees/ customers. RESPONSIBILIT • Businesses should engage/invest in sustainable community programmes/ projects that will Y benefit/uplift communities. • Improve the life style/quality of life of their human resources/employees Planet/Environment • Businesses should not exhaust resources/harm the environment for production purposes • May support energy-efficient/eco-friendly products/programmes. Recycle/Re-use waste, e.g. packaging from recycled material WAYS IN WHICH A BUSINESS PROJECT CAN CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS THE COMMUNITY: • Charitable contribution towards NGOs/Businesses can donate blankets to old-age homes/orphanages/running soup kitchens. • Involvement in community education/Build schools in communities/Offer bursaries to needy students/Donate old computers to less privileged schools/Provide/Support adult education and training in the local community. • Employee volunteer programmes where employees contribute to the community without getting paid for example renovating classrooms at a local disadvantaged primary school. • Teach entrepreneurial skills/Offer support to individuals starting new business ventures. • Conduct skills development/job creation projects/Offering bricklaying courses. • Sponsor art and cultural programmes, such as school choirs. • Support youth programmes, such as sport/recreational activities NATURE AND PROCESS OF CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY The following driving forces pushing businesses towards CSR: • demands from government due to limited government resources • demands for greater participation in CSR programmes from business stakeholders such as suppliers, employees, communities and investors
