Learning Outcomes • An understanding and application of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) • Explain the Pyramid of CSR. • Demonstrate the traditional arguments both against and for CSR. 2 Introduction The focus in this week is on corporate social responsibility, which involves responsibilities outside of making a profit and the key questions for corporations include: • Does business have a social responsibility? • If so, what is the extent and type of the responsibility? 3 Corporate Social Responsibility What is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)? 4 CSR • ‘The awareness, acceptance and management of the wider implications of corporate decisions.’ (Boddy, 2014:140) • ‘It is about what companies do to make a positive contribution to society above and beyond that which constitutes their legal obligations.’ (Blowfield and Murray, 2014:7) • ‘Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is seriously considering the impact of the company’s actions on society.’ (Paluszek, 1976) • ‘Social responsibility … requires the individual to consider his/ her acts in terms of a whole social system, and holds him/ her responsible for the effects of his/ her acts anywhere in that system.’ (Davis,1967) 5 Corporate Social Responsibility Related Concepts Carroll& Buchholtz(2016), PP 32-33 6
