                                                          Materials List:

Alla Prima Landscape Oil Painting: instructor: David M Salerno

Materials can be purchased at Townsend Atelier prior to or during class

                Subject Matter:
Bring a photo print or digital image to work from (perhaps bring more than one so you can
                choose one after the demonstration)
These photos do not need to be “National Geographic” quality. Choose landscape subjects that
you would like to paint. Don’t worry - It is unlikely that you have “ready to paint” photos.
Most (all?) landscape photos need to be altered to make good paintings

                Before Class:

It will really help you to do one of the following before class:

If you are already a plein air painter, bring one of your small outdoor paintings and related
photos and sketches, from which you will develop a larger painting.

If you do not paint plein air, it will greatly help you to paint a small study at home of the photo
that you plan to use in the workshop – limit this study to about 6x8 inches to 8x10 inches. Paint it
alla prima in less than 2 hours.

                Materials for Class:
Sketch pad, 2B pencil, black felt-tip pen
Note pad, laptop, or whatever you like to use to take notes

                A 12x16 to 20x24 painting panel:
Choose a size based on your comfort level, experience and painting speed
14x18 and 16x20 are good sizes if this is a new process for you
A smooth surface will make your life easier!

Oil-primed surfaces preferable (and almost essential for this method) – and they are a joy to use.
Jerry’s sells Centurion smooth oil-primed panels at reasonable price

****DIY – If you only have an acrylic-primed panel, sand it to remove some of the roughness,
then apply a nice thick coat of either white or mid-tone color oil paint.
Be sure to use a fast-drying medium for this priming coat, such as Galkyd Lite. Allow a week for
this to dry before the workshop.

Transparent oxide red oil paint for monochrome washes (I like the Rembrandt product).
                                 (Gamblin = transparent "earth" red)

                      Brushes – Bristle #2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 or 12 (either flat or filbert will work)

Odorless mineral spirits (Gamsol or Turpenoid) (not hardware store grade, as it not odorless)

Medium of your choice (if unsure, try a bit of linseed or walnut oil)

                      Oil paint:
Keep it simple - lots of colors won't help and could make your painting worse.
                      Use what you have.

Here is a list that works nicely for landscape oil painting:
                                 1. Titanium/Zinc (mixing) White
(Titanium White is fine – try mixing white next time you buy white)
                                 2. Cadmium Yellow Pale (also called Cadmium Lemon) or Cadmium Yellow Light
                                 3. Cadmium Yellow Medium
                                 4. Yellow Ochre
                                 5. Cadmium Orange
                                 6. Transparent Oxide Red
                                 7. Cadmium Red Medium (Winsor Newton calls it Cadmium Red)
                                 8. Permanent Alizarin (I like the Gamblin version over the Winsor Newton)
(use up your alizarin crimson which is not permanent, then switch)
                                 9. Ultramarine Blue Deep (not “French”)
                                 10. Veridian

Some prefer Phthalo Blue over Ultramarine Blue and Phthalo Green over Veridian
(They cost a bit less but their intensity can easily overwhelm a landscape painting!)

(Extra optional colors – permanent violet medium, cobalt blue, cad red light, ivory black)
