World Health Organization Health "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well- being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” (World Health Organization, 2010) (World Health Organization, 2007) Mental Health ”Mental Health is not just the absence of mental disorder. It is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community”. (World Health Organization, 2007) Determinants of mental health Multiple social, psychological, and biological factors determine the level of mental health of a person at any point of time. Promoting Mental Health Mental health promotion requires multi-sectoral action, involving a number of government sectors and non- governmental or community-based organizations. The focus should be on promoting mental health throughout the lifespan to ensure a healthy start in life for children and to prevent mental disorders in adulthood and old age. (World Health Organization, 2007) Mental health Key facts: • More than 450 million people suffer from mental disorders. Many more have mental problems. • Mental health is an integral part of health; indeed, there is no health without mental health. • Mental health is more than the absence of mental disorders. • Mental health is determined by socio-economic, biological and environmental factors. • Cost-effective intersectoral strategies and interventions exist to promote mental health. (World Health Organization, 2010)
