"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-
being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
    (World Health Organization, 2010)
   (World Health Organization, 2007)
  Mental Health
”Mental Health is not just the absence of mental
disorder. It is defined as a state of well-being in which
every individual realizes his or her own potential, can
cope with the normal stresses of life, can work
productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a
contribution to her or his community”.
  (World Health Organization, 2007)
  Determinants of mental health
  Multiple social, psychological, and biological
factors determine the level of mental health of
a person at any point of time.
  Promoting Mental Health
Mental health promotion requires multi-sectoral action,
involving a number of government sectors and non-
   governmental or community-based organizations.
The focus should be on promoting mental health throughout
the lifespan to ensure a healthy start in life for children
and to prevent mental disorders in adulthood and old age.
  (World Health Organization, 2007)
           Mental health
  Key facts:
  • More than 450 million people suffer from mental disorders.
   Many more have mental problems.
  • Mental health is an integral part of health; indeed, there is no
   health without mental health.
  • Mental health is more than the absence of mental disorders.
  • Mental health is determined by socio-economic, biological and
   environmental factors.
  • Cost-effective intersectoral strategies and interventions exist to
   promote mental health.
  (World Health Organization, 2010)
