Laurie Cook laurie.cook@vermont.gov 802-279-5166 Assistive Technology Specialist for VocRehab Vermont, LLC Program Question for the group - •What is AT? What is AT? • Assistive Technology (AT) is defined as “any item or piece of equipment that makes your life easier, no matter your age, situation or challenges.” • There are many forms of AT that can help individuals work around barriers while focusing on their strengths. • They can be no-tech, low-tech, or high-tech. Tech Spectrum • AT can be No-Tech: schedule changes, item relocation, seating arrangements, using desk lamps instead of overhead fluorescents. • AT can be Low-Tech: eye-glasses, step stools, pencil grips, walkers, noise canceling headphones, grabbers (or as we like to call it, “the claw”), magnifiers, colored transparency overlays for reading, adding bump dots on remote control buttons. • AT can be High-Tech: special purpose computers, speech-to-text software, screen/document readers, communication devices, wheelchairs, switches, convertible work-stations. Food for Thought - • We often hear that youth are unaware of their own strengths and challenges, and that they are unprepared to advocate for themselves in a college or employment environment.
