INTRODUCTION CRACKING IN CONCRETE IS A MAIN CONCERN THROUGHOUT THE WORLD BECAUSE IT CAUSE LOSS OF STRENGTH OF STRUCTURE WITH TIME. MAINTAINCE OF CRACKED STRUCTURE REQUIRE LOT OF CARE AND MONEY. A ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY SOLUTION IS PREFERED i.e. BIOLOGICAL CONCRETE OVER OTHER ALTERNATIVES LIKE EPOXY RESINS WHICH IS NON DEGRADABLE. WHAT IS BIO CONCRETE It is a special type of concrete invented by a group of microbiology researchers under the head of Henk jonkers. Bio concrete is also called as BACTERIAL CONCRETE or self healing concrete. Its specially made to increase the lifespan or durability of concrete structure by the self healing action of that concrete. WHAT SPECIAL FOUND IN BIO CONCRETE There are two thing present in bio concrete.. 1.. The special bacteria that has to resist the alkalinity and the mechanical stress of concrete. 2..The chemical precursor to activate bacteria. WHAT BACTERIA IS USED Most of the bacteria belongs to genus bacillus are fulfilling the required criteria discussed above, some of the list of bacteria are .. B. Pseudofirmus , B. Cohnii , B. Fila…etc The suitable chemical precursor found to be most suitable is “calcium lactate” …. WORKING PROCESS Cracks less than .2mm can be auto fill by concrete. But it cracks are more than.2mm then concrete itself thus opening passage to chemicals and other materials. In bio concrete if water is the contact with the concrete though the cracks the bacteria get activated from its stage of dormancy formed which further in calcium carbonate which act as a healing material. When the cracks is fill completely by the bacteria it again went to the stage of dormancy again. Again if in future if cracks get widen and the foreign particles tends to enter through the cracks the bacteria gets activated and thus heal the cracks. Thus acting as a long lasting healing agent.
