Mobile Vehicle Fleet Calculation Tool Instructions

The purpose of this spreadsheet is to help members calculate emissions associated with mobile vehicle fleets. Please note that all information contained in this spreadsheet must be entered independently into CRIS. The first sheet lets you estimate vehicle mileage based on fuel consumption and fuel economy (or fuel consumption based on mileage and fuel economy). The second sheet provides a Simplified Estimation Method (SEMs) calculator for determining CH4 and N2O emissions based on CO2 emissions. The third sheet apportions common biofuel blends into their respective biomass and conventional fossil fuel components for simplified data entry into CRIS.

IMPORTANT: Do not enter any data or alter the formulas in the cells that are highlighted gray, as this will result in calculation errors.


Sheet 2: Estimate Mileage or Fuel
Estimated Vehicle Fleet Fuel Consumption or Mileage
Calculating emissions from vehicles requires you to know both the gallons of fuel that were consumed in order to calculate CO2 emissions and miles driven to be able to calculate CH4 and N2O emissions. However, some organizations may not have access to both consumption and mileage data.

If you have mileage data, along with the fuel economy (miles per gallon) of the vehicles in question, you can use the calculator below to estimate the gallons of fuel consumed. You can then use that gallon estimate to calculate CO2 emissions or enter the gallons directly into CRIS.

Likewise, if you have fuel consumption data along with the fuel economy of the vehicles in question, you can use the second calculator below to estimate the mileage. You can then use the mileage data to calculate CH4 and N2O emissions.

Both calculators require both city and highway MPG. Fuel economy data for most vehicles can be found on the US EPA's website www.fueleconomy.gov, or from vehicle purchase records. The estimated combined MPG (Column J) assumes 45 percent of your vehicles’ mileage is highway driving and 55 percent is city driving. You should not change these percentages unless you have accurate information and supporting documentation regarding the driving patterns of your fleet.

These estimations are TCR-approved methodologies for determining fuel consumption or mileage. They are not Simplified Estimation Methods, so you do not need to indicate that they are SEMs in CRIS.

Sheet 3: CH4 & N2O SEMS Calculator

Simplified Estimation Method for Mobile CH4 & N2O Emissions

In many cases, organizations may have fuel usage data available for vehicle fleets but may not have mileage data (and thus can only calculate the CO2 emissions associated with this mobile combustion). This Simplified Estimation Method estimates CH4 and N2O emissions by applying a default ratio of CH4 or N2O to CO2 emissions from gasoline or diesel vehicles in terms of metric tons (mt).

In order to use this method of calculating CH4 and N2O emissions, you must first calculate CO2 emissions for a category of vehicles based on fuel consumption using methodologies in the GRP or directly in the CRIS emissions calculator.

First, enter in a description of the vehicle or vehicles for which you are calculating emissions. Then, enter in the CO2 amount in metric tons (mt) for that vehicle or group of vehicles to calculate CH4 and N2O emissions.

This is a Simplified Estimation Method, and emissions calculated using this approach should be marked as a SEM in CRIS.
