                                         If f(x) = k and k is a constant, then f′(x) = 0.
                Example 1 Find the derivative of f(x) = 5.
                * Derivative of a Linear Function
                                            If f(x) = b +mx, then f′(x) = slope = m.
                Example 2 Find the derivative of f(x) = 5− 3x.
                                                               2
                * Powers of x
                    ThePowerRule
                    For any constant real number n,
                                                            d (xn) = nxn−1.
                                                           dx
                Example 3 Find the derivative of
                         12                           −12                          4
                (a) y = x                   (b) y = x                     (c) y = x3

       * Derivative of a Constant Times a Function
                   If c is a constant, then
                         d [cf(x)] = cf′(x).
                         dx
       * Derivative of Sums and Differences
                      d [f(x)+g(x)] = f′(x)+g′(x)
                     dx
                      d [f(x)−g(x)] = f′(x)−g′(x)
                     dx
       * Derivative of Polynomials
       Example 4 Find the derivative of
        (a) A(t) = 3t5
        (b) r(p) = p5 + p3
        (c) f(x) = 5x2 −7x3

       Example 5 Find the derivative of h(θ) = θ(θ−1/2 −θ−2).
       * Using the Derivative Formulas
       Example 6 Find an equation for the tangent line at x = 1 to the graph of
                        y = x3 +2x2 −5x+7.
       Sketch the graph of the curve and its tangent line on the same axes.
       Example 7 The number, N, of acres of harvested land in a region is given by
                         N=f(t)=120√t,
       where t is the number of years since farming began in the region. Find f(10), f′(10), and the relative rate
       of change f′/f at t = 10. Interpret your answers in terms of harvested land.
