Legal framework Permitted nutrition claims Authorised health claims Common non-compliances 1 Page1 03/07/2018 Nutrition and health claims Nutrition claims Energy Nutrition Health claims Any statement about a relationship between food and health Nutrition claims nutrition claim means any claim which states, suggests or implies that a food has particular beneficial nutritional properties due to: (a) the energy (calorific value) it (i) provides; (ii) provides at a reduced or increased rate; or (iii) does not provide; and/or (b) the nutrients or other substances it (i) contains; (ii) contains in reduced or increased proportions; or (iii) does not contain; Article 2, 2(4) Regulation (EC) 1924/2006 5 Nutrition claims for example: LOW ENERGY ENERGY-REDUCED ENERGY-FREE LOW FAT FAT-FREE LOW SATURATED FAT LOW SUGARS SUGARS-FREE WITH NO ADDED SUGARS LOW SODIUM/SALT SODIUM-FREE or SALT-FREE SOURCE OF FIBRE LIGHT/LITE etc. 2 Page2 03/07/2018 Health claims health claim means any claim that states, suggests or implies that a relationship exists between a food category, a food or one of its constituents and health.
