Course Objectives – Objectifs du cours :
This course introduces students to environmental economics. It covers the basic principles of
environmental economics and discusses environmental problems and how they can be addressed
with policies and decision rules based on those principles. Teaching will be based on the economic
theory of environmental economics combined with real life examples of different environmental
                  goods and services.
The course is divided into two parts described below.

                  COURSE OUTLINE
Part 1: An introduction to Environmental Economics, 9 hours
                  a) What is environmental economics?
                  b) Efficiency and market failure
                  c) Topics in environmental economics
                  d) Evaluation seminar: Groups present their reports and discuss other groups’ reports

Part 2: Seminars in Environmental Economics, 6 hours
This part of the course will consist of a series of seminars on recent advances in environmental
economics and policy and business relevant issues presented by TSE faculty and invited speakers.

                  Prerequisites – Pré requis :
                  Good understanding of intermediate microeconomics.

Practical information about the sessions – Modalités pratiques de gestion du cours :
Use of laptops, tables, cell phones, etc., is welcome if used for course purposes only. Violations will
result in such devices being banned for all students during lectures.

                  Grading system – Modalités d’évaluation :
Group report to be presented and discussed in a seminar (Part 1, 80% of grade). Credits for attendance
in the seminars (Part 2, 20% of grade). Students are expected to attend all lectures, and attendance in
                  the seminar is strictly mandatory.

The above grading structure is under the assumption that traditional in classroom teaching can be
carried out. In the event that distance based teaching is necessary the following grading rule will be
implemented: “Part 1"" = 80%, as above, “Part 2” = 20% based on online multiple choice exam covering
                  presentations from Part 2.

                  Bibliography/references – Bibliographie/références :
The first part of the course follows standard text books in environmental economics. Students can
choose any textbook on the topic. A few examples of textbooks are:
 Nick Hanley, N., Shogren, J., and White, B., Introduction to Environmental Economics, Oxford
                           University Press, 2nd edition, 2013.
 Kolstad, C.D., “Intermediate Environmental Economics”, Oxford University Press,
                           International edition, 2nd edition, 2011.
 Phaneuf, D.J. and T. Requate, “A Course in Environmental Economics – Theory, Policy, and
                           Practice”, Cambridge University Press, 2017.

Required reading will in addition to the textbooks consists of published scientific articles. For the
group report students will be required to find their own literature related to the topic of their report.

Lecture notes, required readings, except textbooks, and any exercises will be made available through
                  the Moodle course page.

                  Distance learning – Enseignement à distance :
Depending on the situation, distance learning may be implemented. If necessary it will be a mix of
“Interactive virtual classrooms”, “Recorded lectures” (videos), with the support of a Chatroom/Forum,
                  and eventually online exercises.
                                                                                                                                 2
