TH THE 24 ALSA NATIONAL ENGLISH COMPETITION INVITATION PROPOSAL I. INTRODUCTION Asian Law Students’ Association (ALSA) is an international, non-profit and non- political association which consists of law students from several countries in Asia. Currently, ALSA has been expanding its network through affiliations with European Law Students’ Association and Australian Law Students' Association. ALSA International is composed of 16 National Chapters, where one of them is ALSA National Chapter Indonesia. ALSA Local Chapter Universitas Indonesia (ALSA LC UI) is one of the members of the 14 Local Chapters in ALSA National Chapter Indonesia. Since 1995, ALSA LC UI has successfully held ALSA National English Competition or ALSA E-Comp, a competition which uses English as its language of instruction, targeted for senior high school and university students. Numerous senior high school and university students from all over Indonesia had continually participated in this event, thus nationally ALSA E-Comp had successfully proved its prominent existence for 24 (twenty-four) years, with the previous total number of competition participants reaching 797 (seven hundred and th ninety-seven) people. Continuing the success, we proudly present the 24 ALSA National English Competition (ALSA E-Comp 2020). Due to Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID 19) pandemic, ALSA E-Comp 2020 will be held online via Zoom App platform. II. THEME This year, ALSA E-Comp 2020 will be held with the tagline of “Take the Opportunity, Achieve the Extraordinary”. With this theme, ALSA E-Comp 2020 is expected to be able to serve as a medium to develop the participant’s skill, potential and knowledge throughout the various competitions that are held. By acknowledging these matters, the targeted competitions participants of ALSA E-Comp 2020 are expected to prepare themselves better in tackling the challenges and issues ahead of their time in the future. III. TIME & PLATFORM A. Main Event of ALSA E-Comp 2020 Day, date : Friday – Monday, October 9th – 12th, 2020 Platform : Zoom App IV. COMPETITIONS A. Debate Debate is a competition where two teams will argue with each other regarding the motion determined. The motion that will be used on Preliminary Rounds and Elimination Rounds will bring the theme of international and national issues in the field of social politics, economics, law, culture and environment. The Asian Parliamentary System will administer the competitions with 40 (forty) teams representing various institutions nationwide. The purpose of this debate competition is to develop a critical and analytical thoughts on certain issues and deliver those thoughts and arguments in a logical manner. In addition, this competition also aims to grow the confidence of the participants to argue in English. E-Comp Model United Nations ALSA E-Comp MUN is an authentic simulation of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly and multilateral agencies, whether they are in the structure of the United Nations or regional bodies. Each delegate will represent one country of the UN member to defend the interests of that country and also to contribute in formulating solutions for international issues. Each senior high school and varsity may send a delegation to be divided in 3 (three) councils. There will be the council of Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) for the senior high school students. There will also be the council of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and United Nations Security Council (UNSC) available for both senior high school students and varsity. The objectives of this competition are to sharpen the ability to speak and put forward arguments, develop diplomacy skills, improve the participants’ confidence to argue, negotiate, convey thoughts and aspirations to the public and also to enrich knowledge on international issues as well as to give an illustration on how the UN works. C. Newscasting Newscasting is a competition where the participants is going to deliver the news prepared by the committee as if they were a professional news anchor. The aim of this competition is to increase the participants’ abilities in delivering the news in English professionally, the participants’ confidence. Paper Presentation Paper Presentation is a competition where the participants are required to make an essay in English regarding a certain issue which then the participants will have to deliver it in a form of a presentation. The purpose of this competition is to increase the participants’ ability in presenting the material in English and the confidence to perform in public. Speech Speech is a competition where the participants will be giving a speech from the essay they made before based on the chosen themes given by the committee, which uses English as its language of instruction. The aim of this competition is to increase the capabilities of the participants in delivering a speech, particularly in English and to increase the confidence to speak in public.
