www.thebostonschool.com tel. 044 310 3038 The Boston School GmbH IELTS Speaking & Writing Preparation Course Students must complete an IELTS mock test before attending our intensive IELTS preparation course. By doing so, students understand which areas of the exam they should focus on and whether or not they are ready to take the exam. As of August 2018, we will offer a preparation course for Speaking & Writing. Later, in November 2018, we will add Reading & Listening modules. Students will then have the opportunity to prepare for 1 or all 4 sections of the IELTS exam. OVERVIEW OF COURSE CURRICULUM (proposed scheduling) DAY 1 Mock test: Listening, Reading & Writing Section: 3 hours (2 weeks prior) DAY 2 Speaking Parts 1 & 2: 1.25 hours Writing Part 1: 2 hours DAY 3 Speaking Part 3 with review of Parts 1 & 2: 1.25 hours Writing Part 1: 2 hours DAY 4 Writing Part 2: 2 hours Writing Part 2: 1.5 hours See following pages for details for each day’s course curriculum. 1 www.thebostonschool.com tel. 044 310 3038 DAY 1 Speaking Session 1 Parts 1 & 2: 1.25 hours – Storytelling practice At the start of this session, students will gain insight into the IELTS speaking band scoring system and will watch some examples of Speaking Test Parts 1 & 2 performed at different levels to help students self- assess their level. We’ll practice small talk, prepare 1-2 minute storytelling exercises as well as talk about common topics which you need to relate to in your personal life. Students will practice Speaking Parts 1 & 2 with classmates and also have the opportunity to speak alone in front of the class. Writing Part 1 Session 1: 2 hours - Analyzing data/Finding trends/Describing processes At the start of this session, students will gain insight into the IELTS writing band scoring system for Writing Test Part 1 and will read examples of writing tests scored at different levels to help students self- assess their level. Students are guided in analyzing data and identifying key trends to describe “the big picture”. Students also practice summarizing these points in speaking and writing exercises. 2 www.thebostonschool.com tel. 044 310 3038 DAY 2 Speaking Session 2 Part 3: 1.25 hour – Talking about issues affecting society & business At the start of this session, students will gain insight into the IELTS speaking band scoring system. Students will watch some examples of Speaking Test Part 3 performed at different levels to help students self-assess their level. We’ll warm up by practicing Speaking Part 2 and then continue onto Part 3, where students expand on the same subject by talk about affects on society and people as a whole. We will practice brainstorming techniques to help come up with meaningful arguments and practice Part 3 with classmates. Students will also have the opportunity to speak alone in front of the class. Writing Part 1 Session 2: 2 hours Critical Thinking & Lexicon Students practice writing in a logical sequence. Students will be introduced to specific vocabulary to accurately describe trends and processes, as well as vocabulary that help them write clear and concise sentences packed with details. Test Part 1 (with a 20-minute time limit) will be practiced in class. 3 www.thebostonschool.com tel. 044 310 3038 DAY 3 Writing Part 2 Session 3: 2 hours: Creating an essay outline/deciding on content It can be difficult to write under time pressure – even when writing in your mother tongue. This is why in this session we will practice the critical step of thinking before you write. We’ll practice brainstorming ideas and select which ideas are best and what order to write them in. This will lead us to creating outlines before we begin to write our essay. We will also show how to write arguments more effectively and concisely by looking at clear topic sentences, linking words and phrases. Test Part 2 (with a 40-minute time limit) will be practiced in class. Writing Part 2 Session 4: 1.5 hours: Developing clear structure & proofreading We will focus on what makes a good introduction and conclusion to an essay. Student will practice writing good topic sentences, creating connections between paragraphs and ideas to create a clear and concise essay. Lastly, we will guide students through the very important step of proofreading and correcting essays. 4
