The eight-phase, three-pronged process of EMDR facilitates the resumption of normal information processing and integration. ! The AIP model provides the framework through which the eight phases and three prongs (past, present, and future) of EMDR are understood and implemented. ! Current research emphasizes the importance of maintaining fidelity to EMDR's eight-phased approach. Nevertheless, in doing so, EMDR "may be implemented in more than one way as long as the broad goals of each phase are achieved" (www.emdria.org). ©2014 Sarah Jenkins MC, LPC No reproduction or distribution without expressed permission of the 3 author ON HORSEMANSHIP ! “The horse is a great equalizer. He doesn't care how good looking you are, or how rich you are, or how powerful you are. He takes you for how you make him feel.” – Buck Brannaman” ! “Your horse is a mirror to your soul, and sometimes you may not like what you see. Sometimes, you will.” - Buck Brannaman ” ! “You are not working on the horse; you are working on yourself” - Ray Hunt ©2014 Sarah Jenkins MC, LPC No reproduction or distribution without expressed permission of the 4 author 2& 6/22/14& EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY ! Archetype of horse in battle having partnered in war ! Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) has achieved success in a variety of therapeutic settings 1st in 1792 & especially psychiatric institutions prior to psychotropic meds(Chandler, 2005). ! Hippotherapy currently for clients with special needs as well as for speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy ! The need for an all-inclusive animal-facilitated treatment for PTSD has also been suggested (Altschuler, 1999). ©2014 Sarah Jenkins MC, LPC No reproduction or distribution without expressed permission of the 5 author THE ANIMAL-HUMAN BOND ! Polyvagal Theory & Social engagement system: Associated with attachment - reactions to stress including as the infant engages in attachment seeking behaviors - release of Oxytocin. ! Oxytocin: The "feel good" neurotransmitter of connection. Higher levels associated with nurturing & social engagement. "Protective in nature” (Bessel van der Kolk, 2007) ! Increase in Oxytocin = Decrease in Cortisol ! The activation of the oxytocin releasing system in the horse/human relationship and relationships with other animals (Odenaal, 2000; Odendaal & Meintjes, 2003; Handlin et al., 2011) ! Equine Facilitated Therapy reduces cortisol: Current study of adolescents engaging in weekly 90 minute EFP sessions = a decrease in salivary cortisol levels post session compared to basal levels (Pendry, Smith, Roeter, 2014) (I can email article to you if you like) ©2014 Sarah Jenkins MC, LPC No reproduction or distribution without expressed permission of the 6 author 3& 6/22/14& EQUILATERAL OVERVIEW ! That Equine-Assisted EMDR is still EMDR. We are in line with standard EMDR protocol in its eight phased approach ! In arena Equine Assisted EMDR sessions ! In office Equine Assisted EMDR – Think holistically - You are also “bringing them” i.e. the experiences with them into the EMDR session, in office, regularly and with specific intention. ! The EquiLateral Protocol truly places great emphasis on knowing EMDR especially the how’s and why’s in each phase. ! The horse is seen as a sentient being & co-therapist and brought into the eight phases of EMDR. ©2014 Sarah Jenkins MC, LPC No reproduction or distribution without expressed permission of the 7 author EQUILATERAL OVERVIEW ! This is NOT about training folks in EMDR or EAP but rather the INTEGRATION of these approaches to become Equine-Assisted EMDR EMDRIA APPROVED TRAINING 15 EMDRIA CREDITS ! That the “EA” (Equine Assisted) part of Equine Assisted EMDR is an all inclusive model, that supports Equine Therapy Providers from a multitude of approaches Ex: EAGALA, EFMHA, EPONA, OK-CORRAL etc. re: Ground Based etc. ! The equine assisted/facilitated experiences are seen within the framework of EMDR – specifically the phase and the intention of that phase. Therefore it is paramount that the provider really know EMDR through and through. ! Dually Trained EMDRT/EP or EMDRT partnering with EP (depends on your EAP/EFP model) ! The EquiLateral™ protocol is based on anecdotal evidence and there is currently no formal research. Anyone who wishes to practice the methods, protocols or ideas listed herein is also assumed to be qualified practitioners within their specified area of expertise. ©2014 Sarah Jenkins MC, LPC No reproduction or distribution without expressed permission of 8 the author 4&
