No. certified certification valid until AKL 2004 C 6 ECTS Part of basic studies Title ANGLŲ LINGVISTIKOS ĮVADAS Title in English INTRODUCTION TO ENGLISH LINGUISTICS Subject annotation in English This is an introductory course in which students are acquainted with the basic concepts of modern English linguistics, the main branches of linguistics and methods of analysis. The course offers a survey of the main aspects of the English phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics; it introduces different approaches to linguistic study and provides the students with the knowledge about modern achievements in psycholinguistics, language acquisition by children and second language acquisition. Necessary background knowledge for the study of the subject - Study outcomes The students learn: ● to use the fundamental linguistic terms; ● to apply the main principles of modern linguistics; ● to carry out a basic linguistic analysis of the English sound system, word and sentence structure, sense relations of words and sentences; ● to discuss the main aspects of sociolinguistic context and other extralinguistic factors; ●to explain the essential differences between different branches of linguistics Subject contents Linguistics as a scientific study of language. Features common to all languages. The main differences between traditional grammar and modern linguistics. The basic principles of modern linguistics. Phonetics: the sound system, stress and intonation. Phonology. Phonemes and allophones. English phonotactics. Morphology: word structure and word formation. Sentence structure (noun phrase, verb phrase, prepositional phrase). Semantics: sense relations among words. Sentence meaning. Brain and language; language centers; types of aphasias. Children’s language acquisition. Second language acquisition. Language use in social contexts. Dialects, sociolects and register. Language change. Study hours Lectures – 45 hours Seminars – 22,5 hours Individual student assignments – 92,5 hours Evaluation of study results Mid-term– 30% Individual assignments - 20% Final examination – 50%.
