                                                     FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
                     2.1 Definition of Figurative Language
Figurative language is a form of rhetoric, namely the use of words in speech
and writing to convince or influence listeners and readers. The word comes from the
Greek rhetorical rhetor which means orator or orator. In ancient Greek times, the
rhetoric is indeed an important part of an education and by a variety of figure of speech
because it is very important and must be controlled completely by the Greek and Roman
who gave the name to the various arts of persuasion.
Figurative language, figurative or "figure of speech" is figurative language,
beautiful language that is used to elevate and enhance the effect by way of introducing
and comparing an object or a particular thing with objects or other things that are more
common. In short, the use of a certain figure of speech may change and cause the value
of a particular flavor or connotations.
In the revealed word associated with the figurative language, not just we give,
but all what we want to say, has its own purpose, because in the figurative language
itself there are many kinds-kinds. In this paper the notion of style is a way to use
language in a particular context, by certain people, for a particular purpose. Use a style
that is appropriate (according to the time and the target receiver) can attract the attention
of the recipient. Conversely, if its use is not appropriate, then the use of figurative
language will be futile, even interfere with the reader. For example, if the young adult
novels today there are many styles of the language of the period before independence,
then the message is not up and young adult novels that would be frowned upon readers.
The use of language style can also turn what is stated in the text, because the style of the
language can express the idea that meaningful briefly.
The use of figure of speech either in education or the other is expected to assist
in writing. Especially for students, both novel writer and poet. Figure of speech can be
used as a way to express thoughts through language typically showing the spirit and
personality of the author with the choice of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences.
Figurative language is often considered a synonym of style, but the actual
figure of speech, including in style. Before entering the discussion of figurative
language, the first to be put forward the notion of style. Language style has a very broad
scope. According to the explanation Harimurti Kridalaksana (Dictionary of Linguistics),
the style of language has three terms, namely:
                              1. Utilization of property by a person's language in speaking or writing
                              2. The use of certain varieties to obtain certain effects
                              3. Overall characteristics of a group of authors of literary language.
Figurative language change the literal meaning to make a meaning fresh or
clea, to express complexity, to capture a physicalor sensory effect or to extend meaning
figurative language should not be taken literally. We have to look beyond the literal
meaning of the words to other meanings to connotation of the words.
At state by Giroux and Williston (1974 : 10), figurative language is language
which departs from the straight forward use of the words. It creates a special effect,
clarifies an idea, and makes writing more colorful and forceful. Figurative language is
language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal
interpration. A good translator should understand types of meaning that exist in the
texts, because it is understood that there are many types of meaning. True meaning of
words is found of resolving what peope do with them, not what they say about it, and
the context will determine them. Each language has its own idiomatic way of expressing
meaning through lexical itemsuch as idioms, secondary meaning, metaphor, and
                     figurative meaning.
Figurative language can look based on sentence structure is like Keraf (1996 :
                     124) said sentence structre can be foundation for creating the figurative language. The
sentence structreis how sentence has a sub sentence which is important in the sentence.
The sentence structure devided be three part based the character. The first character is
periodic, if the important part or the idea has emphasis in the last sentence. The second
character is not boisterous, if the emphasis sentence in the first sentence. And the third
character is sentence proportional, it is the sentence has two sentences or more which
                     are some position.
The other definition about figurative language is according to M. H. Abrams
(1999 : 96), figurative language is a conspicuous departure from what users of a
language apprehend as the standard meaning of words, or else the standard order of
words, in order to achieve some speacial meaning or effect. Figures are some times
described as primarily poetic, but they are integral to the functioning of language and
indispensable to all modes of discourse. So that figurative language is a language that
makes things more dramatic and more make life a poem, novel, or song lyric.
Figurative language usualy called by figure of speech it is a broad for a large
variety of uses of words, phrases clauses and sentences to achieve desired affect in
meaning, sound and style (Wordsworth, 1965 : 258). Figure of speech is also defined
as deviation in the use of words from literal sense or from simple and commond
practice. Figurative language has connotative or implied meaning that we could not
find in the dictionary as a denotative meaning. Figure of speech are non-literal ways of
saying things: that is, the words have to be interpreted in order to understand the
                       intended meaning. (Elder, 2004 : 292).
Figure of speech has a connotative meaning, in Aristotle articles about
considered epic poetry, tragedy, comedy, dithyrambic poetry and music to be
imitative, each varying in imitation by medium, object and manner. For example,
music imitates with the media of the rhythm and harmony, whereas dance imitates
with rhythm alone, and poetry with language.
According to Indonesian dictionary, style or figure of speech is the use of rich
language, the use of certain varieties to obtain certain effects, the overall
characteristics of a group of authors of literary language and the typical way to express
thoughts and feelings, either orally or in writing. In other words, the style of language
or figure of speech is the typical way to express thoughts and feelings in writing or
orally. The specificity of this style lies in the selection of words that do not directly
express the real meaning. Meanwhile, according to Prof.Dr.HG Tarigan that figure of
speech is a way to express thoughts through language typically showing the spirit and
                       personality of the author.
Figurative language has been widely examined by linguist in the study of
literature in recent years. It is because figurative language has the essence of style and
beauty. Figurative language often provides a more effective means of saying what we
mean than direct statement. In the specific sense, figurative language may take the
                        form of figures of speech.
Figurative language is used in any form of communication, such as in daily
conversation, articles in newspaper, advertisements, novels, poems, etc. The
effectiveness of figurative language in four main reasons, Perrine (1982) First,
figurative language affords readers imaginative pleasure of literary works.
Second, it is a way of bringing additional imagery into verse, making the
abstract concrete, making literary works more sensuous. The third, figurative is a way
of adding emotional intensity to otherwise merely informative statements and
conveying attitudes along with information. And the last, it is a way of saying much in
brief compass. She divides figurative language into seven types, namely metaphor,
simile, personification, metonymy, paradox, overstatement, understatement, irony and
illusion. Keraf (1998:129) divided figurative language into two classifications, namely
rhetoric and analogy. The first classification covers illiteracy, assonances, anastrophe,
apophasis, apostrophe, asyndeton, polycyndenton, chiasmus, ellipsis, euphemism,
litotes, paradox, hyperbole and oxymoron. Meanwhile the later covers simile,
metaphor, allegory, personification, allusion, metonymy, irony and synecdoche.
Another Indonesian linguist, Muliono (1989) divided or figurative language
into three categories. They are analogy and comparison which consists of simile,
metaphor and personification, contradiction, which consists of hyperbole, litotes and
irony and association which consists of metonymy, synecdoche and euphemism.
Metaphor and simile are the two figures of speech which are commonly thought to be
similar, while they are actually different.
Figurative language or figures of speech by Kridalaksana called “a figure or
rhetoric or rhetorical figure is a tool to expand the meaning of a word or group of
words to get certain effects by comparing or divide and associate the two things”.
                               According to Abrams (1981:63):
“figurative language (figurative language)is a distortionof language use by
speakers of understanding the language used everyday (ordinary), deviations from the
standard language, or distortion sense of the word, adeviation of a series of words in
order to obtain some special meaning”.
According to all the experts above, I can make a conclution that figurative
language is the use of words, phrases, symbols, and ideas in such as way as to evoke
                        mental images and sense impressions.
