Continue Yonsei korean vocabulary practice for foreigners pdf While I wrote in my previous post that I had enjoyed learning what can be considered quite basic vocabulary from my Korean children's book, I still want to keep expanding my knowledge of Korean in all sorts of directions. When it comes to Korean fluency, one thing is to sound Korean and have the correct intonation. Another thing is to bring your spoken language to life by mastering a wide spectrum of words and phrases. One of the books I bought when I was last in Seoul is called Korean vocabulary practice for foreigners, advanced level. It is published by Yonsei University and for the past three months it has been on proud display on my book shelf. Last night I decided it was time for this book and myself to get acquainted. Here's the index of the book. Chapters are divided into verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverb, onomatopoeias, pre- and suffixes, proverbs, idioms, and Chinese punctuation. Each chapter introduces roughly between 20 and 50 words. Each word is introduced with its correct pronunciation in brackets. It then introduces the use (i.e. whether used with, for example, subject/object), fixed expressions, and test phrases. Where appropriate, the synonyms and antonyms of the word shall also be given. I like that part in particular. At the end of each chapter, there are review questions along the lines of the TOPIK tests. These exercises help activate the reader and force remembrance of the vocabulary covered by the chapter. Quite useful indeed. I spent most of last night (and this morning) in the company of this book and I have to say that while I was hesitant at first it is certainly not a bad book. In many ways it is organized in the same way as TTMIK's My Weekly Korean Vocabulary series, which I enjoyed greatly. I plan to study with this book a little every day and hopefully finish it over the next few months. I am pleased to discover that I actually already know many of the words introduced here. It also helps make each chapter less overwhelming, since I'm already familiar with about half of the content. For those of you who want to keep expanding your intermediate-advanced level korean vocabulary but don't really know how to do it, this book is a great resource. Being anything other than a collection of words and sample sentences is by no means exciting, but it provides a good structure that can be useful for advanced students who want to track their progress and study in a more organized way. When I read Korean online newspapers this morning I noticed the use of two of the words I studied last night. Yesterday I wouldn't have understood, but today I did. Look, it's progress and it feels so good! I am a Danish girl living in Korea teaching economics at Sogang economics. When I'm not working I love learning Korean, discovering this beautiful country, reading and blog about my experiences and thoughts. Follow me on www.sofietokorea.com :) © 1996-2014, Amazon.com, Inc. or affiliates Hello again, all, and welcome my first textbook review in a while! Today I would like to introduce a book aimed at vocabulary learning and practice. Part of Yonsei University Korean Language Institute's Korean study series, which includes not only books on vocabulary but also books on grammar, it can be used independently or alongside yonsei main classroom use textbooks. I think it's a pretty decent book for vocabulary study, and here's why. Layout This book is laid out with vocabulary grouped into eleven topics. With this kind of breakdown of words, you can generally expect to learn words that are related and suitable to be used in similar situations. In general, this applies. The topics; which includes People, Health, Relationships and Economics among other things, are all very practical. Each topic section starts with all the words listed and defined, with several examples and even related words and synonyms and antonyms given. Once the vocabulary — about 70 to 80 words per paragraph — is introduced, there are approximately 8~9 pages of practice questions for the entire section. Exercise questions include strict definition matching, selecting synonyms and antonyms, and filling in missing words in sentences or a short passage. Some of the activities give you a word bank, while others you have to rely entirely on your knowledge of the words. The amount of practice issues and variety in activity types is really nice! As for the design of the book itself, it is very utilitarian-a lot of text, not a lot of colors, and no images. It's a no-nonsense, clean, format that's easy for the eyes. Words Overall, vocabulary chosen for this book are all really good picks. If you know all the main words in this book, you will be prepared to talk about a decent selection of topics, and if you learn all the synonyms and related words and phrases and such, to go with each main word, you will be golden. In general, the classifications of the words in the various topics are pretty appropriate, although I wonder why a lot of really useful adverbis were dumped in the School and Class section. Of course, a lot of words fall under several classifications, and aside from the weird adverb dump, I'm not crazy about any of the choices made. Verdict If you want to make sure you have all the vital intermediate level vocab (and a bit more) down, this book is an excellent choice. The simple structure and clean page layout make sure your eyes don't get tired even if you end up spending hours at a time with this book. If I could change one thing about this book, I'd break it down into more sections with fewer words per section. With over 70 words per section to learn before moving on to the exercises, it seems a bit heavy and could be really stressful if you really come across most of the words for the first time. Overall, this book is as solid as one would expect to come out of Yonsei University. Recommended! I bought a new book last night. 한국어 어휘 연습 ~ Vocabulary Practice for foreigners (Intermediate level). I bought it through a local foreigners Facebook group, Bundang Buy and Sell. It's in immaculate condition - as new - and only cost me 7,000원 (About 4 pounds). The book is published by Yonsei University and is a kind of dictionary, with the words organized into categories. (Oh yes, a vocabulary book!) The first category is 사람 - People. The words are indicated by a translated meaning, a usage example (of the word) - Noun, Adverb, a sample expression, and 2 sample phrases.
